Aside from adding a major flavour bomb spice blends are an easy way to add anti-inflammatory ingredients into a meal or snack.

In the western world we don’t think about food as medicine or the medicinal properties of things we cook with. But the spices in our pantry are very literally nature’s pharmacy and an incredible tasty way to help reduce inflammation.

  • Paprika has a spicy flavour because it has a chemical called capsaicin in it. We then smoke it. Capsaicin has been looked at to see if it might help reduce inflammation. Researchers think that capsaicin may help lower inflammation by stopping the body’s inflammatory molecules from being activated.
    Chilli Powder like smoked paprika has capsaicin in it, which has been looked at for its possible pain-relieving properties. Capsaicin has been shown to stop the activity of some inflammatory markers.
  • Garlic powder contains allicin and other sulphur compounds found in garlic have been studied for their ability to reduce inflammation. Researchers have found that allicin stops the body from making inflammatory cytokines and enzymes.
  • Onion powder, like garlic, have sulphur compounds like allicin and quercetin that have been shown to help reduce inflammation. In particular, quercetin has been shown to reduce inflammation by stopping the production of chemicals that cause inflammation and changing how immune cells work.
  • Himalayan Salt (pink salt) is potassium and magnesium which help reduce inflammation. Himalayan salt may also help keep the balance of electrolytes, which is important for good health and controlling inflammation.
    Black pepper has piperine which has been shown to stop inflammatory enzymes from working and lower the production of inflammatory hormones. This helps the body’s inflammation go away.
