Anyone whos been around chronic conditions and illness will inevitably come across the term spoonie or people talking about having no spoons. Heres what we mean.

Its all good and well to talk about the value of nutrition in managing our health. The practicality of having the spoons to do it, is another story. Foodies and Spoonies Kerry and Leigh know this dance well.

Sometimes it takes a spoonie to help a spoonie.

When you add in dont eat this, you cant eat that or eat this superfood harvested by monks on a full moon from the latest best ways to eat for condition X or a helpful medico thats read a new paper, and then having most ingredients on food labels look like an algebra book, its no wonder that we end up eating the same things week in and week out. It just takes less spoons.

It takes a lot of spoons to cook. Theres planning what youre going to eat for the week, the shopping, putting it away, prepping the meal/s, cooking the meals, the cleaning up after the eatventures. It can be a lot. The thought alone is exhausting on a good day.

Our recipes come with a spoon rating so you know what youre in for before you start, call out what is great to add to the freezer stash and we try to keep recipes to typical package sizes for things to reduce the measuring and random bits that get left if the fridge or freezer.

With our meal plans, we try to keep to a core set of ingredients to reduce waste and keep the shop more budget friendly.

Weve also added notes to which are the better options, shopped around for the best buys at Coles, Woolies, Aldi and Costco and which brands to avoid known inflammatory ingredients that are often hidden in the small print on the ingredients panel.

What is Spoon Theory?

We can’t claim credit for spoonies. Spoon Theory was coined by Christine Miserandino in 2003 as a metaphor to help explain what it’s like to live with a chronic illness.

Eating out with a friend, Christine was dutifully taking her meds before she ate which led her friend to ask what it was like to live with chronic illness. Christine gathered all the spoons from around the table and started allocating spoons as a measure of physical and mental energy it takes to complete activities and tasks. She explained that she had to plan how she was going to use her spoons every day so to not run out of energy.

The spoons helped Christine to show the way that people with chronic illness often start their days off with limited quantities of energy. The number of spoons represented how much energy she had to spend throughout the day.

As her friend rattled off the different tasks she completes throughout the day, Christine took away a spoon for each activity. She took spoon after spoon until her friend only had one spoon left. Her friend then stated that she was hungry; Christine replied that eating would use another spoon. If she were to cook, a spoon would be needed for cooking. She would have to select her next move wisely to conserve her energy for the rest of the night.

So, No Spoons to Cook is a tongue in cheek reference on how we maximise our spoons and manage our nutrition to get the most out of our spoons. Its by spoonies for spoonies.

Who we are

The Spoonies behind No Spoons

Kerry and Leigh met through their love of food.

We both live our own rollercoasters of chronic illnesses and spent years navigating the conflicting and confusing information about what is the right way for a spoonie to eat.

We know that momentary this could be the answer which quickly turns into frustrated that the answer was based on the nirvana of time and energy that most spoonies just dont have.

We needed better solutions than the options laid out by our various specialists. There had to be more to life with chronic illness that didnt center around zombifying meds and running like a flat battery all of the time. This led us to a low inflammatory way of eating and using food as part of our care plans.

Weve both been living a keto and low carb lifestyle for several years, using food as medicine (in additional to our traditional treatments) and know it helps increase our spoons.

No Spoons to Cook came about after countless conversations of sharing hacks and recipes, talking about why do our clinical care teams gloss over diet or make it unattainable, how to make keto and nutrition easier and more accessible.

Weve learned ways to make our spoons count in the kitchen, finding ways to adapt how we shop, prep and cook to reduce the spoons it takes and still eat delicious, nutritiously dense food that we actually enjoy.

Were not claiming to have all the answers. We dont. No Spoons to Cook is based on our own experience and research, and what we know works best for us. Our recipes focus on low inflammatory ingredients, whole foods and are founded in ketogenic and low carb ways of eating.

We encourage spoonies to stay curious, ask questions, do your own research, listen to your body and to work with a Registered Dietitian or Medical Professional when appropriate to tailor your nutritional needs to support your care plan and goals.
